What WebP is and why you ran into it
WebP is an image format created by Google that produces files 25% to 35% lighter than a
JPG of equivalent quality. That is why nearly every modern website serves it, and why “Save image as…”
in your browser often leaves you with a .webp file that Word will not insert, PowerPoint
rejects and your editor does not recognise.
The fix is not to hunt for software that opens WebP: it is to convert the file to the format you actually need. This tool does that with nothing to install and nothing uploaded anywhere.
JPG or PNG?
The decision comes down to one thing: whether the image has transparent areas.
- A logo, an icon or a cut-out with a transparent background should go to PNG. JPG has no transparency, so anything transparent gets filled in.
- A photograph should go to JPG. It will weigh far less than the PNG and nobody will see the difference.
This tool fills transparent areas with white when converting to JPG, rather than leaving black patches, which is what many converters do when they meet an alpha channel.
Animated WebP
Animated WebP exists — the modern equivalent of the GIF. A browser can only pull the first frame out of it, so converting an animated WebP gives you a still image. That is not a bug in the tool: it is a real limit of what can be done in a browser without a 30 MB video engine. We say it here rather than letting you find out the hard way.
And the other way round
If what you want is the opposite — converting your JPGs and PNGs to WebP so your site loads faster — use the general converter and pick WebP as the output. A WebP at 80% quality usually lands at half the weight of a JPG at 82% with a difference you need to hunt for.
Frequently asked questions
Why will my computer not open WebP files?
Windows 10 and 11 show them in Explorer and Photos, but plenty of desktop software (Word, PowerPoint, older editors, some content management systems) still refuses them. Converting to JPG or PNG solves it in a second, with nothing to install.
Do I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?
A little: the WebP was already lossy and JPG compresses again. At quality 85 or above the difference is imperceptible on screen. If the image is a graphic with text or fine lines, choose PNG and you lose nothing at all.
Is transparency preserved?
Only if you convert to PNG. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. If your image is a logo or a cut-out, pick PNG.
Can I convert several WebP files at once?
Yes, up to 30 per batch. Each one gets its own row with before and after sizes, and you can download them one by one or all together in a ZIP.
Does it work with animated WebP?
The first frame is converted and you get a still image. Full animations would need a video converter, which is beyond what this page can reasonably do inside a browser.
