About Ilmara

A handful of image tools that run inside your browser, with no accounts and no uploads.

The idea

Almost every online image tool works by uploading your files to a server. Ilmara started from a simple question: browsers are now powerful enough to do that work on your own machine, so why would anything need uploading?

How it works underneath

When you open a tool, the page downloads the engine it needs — a HEIC decoder, an image compressor — and runs it in your browser. From there your files are read off your disk, processed in memory and downloaded back. There is never an upload request. It is verifiable: open the tool, go offline, and watch it keep converting.

The engines are open-source projects. We credit them, with their licences, in the footer of every page.

What that means for you

• Real privacy, not a promise in a policy. There are no files to store or delete because none ever arrive anywhere.
• No artificial limits: no daily quota and no paid tier that unlocks more conversions. The only limits are your device's memory, and they are written on every tool.
• Speed: no waiting for a file to travel up and back down.

How it pays for itself

With discreet advertising placed inside the content, never on top of the tool and never in pop-ups. We do not sell data because we have no data to sell.
